Therapeutic Style

With an eclectic therapeutic approach, Mr. Tallman’s techniques borrow heavily from acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and other mindfulness-based therapies, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and humanistic approaches. Mr. Tallman is skilled in both traditional talk therapy as well as, art therapy and other creative modalities. He emphasizes a collaborative approach that allows the client to feel supported and empowered through cognitive-behavioral interventions.

“I find it important to give clients homework at the end of each session, which may be specific tasks or things to think about more deeply as they move through their daily routines. Clients have given very positive feedback about this, feeling that it moves them along more quickly in the therapeutic process. With adolescents, I work closely with parents to help manage the adolescent’s behavior and help improve communication. I use acceptance and commitment therapy with adolescents to assist clients in changing their relationship with problematic thoughts, to help them focus on value-driven goals, and to work on social skills training to increase flexibility and improve frustration tolerance.”

With a warm, empathetic demeanor, Mr. Tallman focuses on his clients’ needs and their abilities to reach their goals. Finding the approach that works best for each individual client is one of Mr. Tallman’s strengths.

“I see assisting clients in building vitality as an important aspect of psychotherapy. Empowering clients to overcome their struggles, recognize their strengths, and discover solutions to their problems allows them to leave therapy with skills to use toward happier, more meaningful, lives.”

Mr. Tallman received his master’s in art therapy from the University of Illinois at Chicago and his undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
