Laura Spicer, Psy.D.
Children, Adolescents, and Adults
Dr. Laura Spicer is a clinical psychology post-doctoral fellow in the St. Charles office, returning to her professional practice after a parenting hiatus. With over 25 years of experience spanning clinical work & training, community involvement, entrepreneurism, continuing education, and raising two neurodivergent children, Dr. Spicer resumes practice with deepened empathy and perspective.
Dr. Spicer provides therapy and psychological assessment for children, adolescents, and adults facing challenges with anxiety, depression, emotional regulation, focus, motivation, behavior/impulsivity, relationships, and academic/work performance. She specializes in ADD/ADHD and other neurodevelopmental disorders.
Dr. Spicer is passionate about offering support to adults navigating life with undiagnosed or newly diagnosed ADHD, many of whom recognized their neurodivergence after their children’s diagnoses.
“ADHD can affect self-worth and cause daily frustration. Many adults with ADHD have spent their lives needlessly feeling misunderstood, struggling with low self-esteem and chronic underachievement despite their intelligence and potential. This often leads to feelings of anxiety, overwhelm, shame, and grief. Yet, an explanation and more effective strategies for one’s lifelong struggles can bring life-changing relief, self-compassion, and a renewed sense of hope for the future.”
Dr. Spicer takes an integrative therapeutic approach that is insight-oriented and solution-focused, drawing from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), mindfulness, neuroscience, and psychodynamic and systems theories. Known for her warmth, empathy, and humor, Dr. Spicer creates a collaborative, safe space where clients feel heard and empowered.
As treatment progresses, clients build self-awareness, recognize their strengths, learn new skills, and develop strategies to succeed and thrive.
Dr. Spicer earned her BA from Carleton College and received her doctorate in clinical psychology with a family psychology focus from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology in Chicago. She completed her doctoral internship at the Ulster County Mental Department in New York and post- doctoral fellowship at The Theraplay Institute in Chicago.
